Derek Harper is one of the foundational Dallas Mavericks. Drafted eleventh overall out of Illinois in 1983, he spent parts of twelve seasons with the franchise and still sits atop the all-time Mavericks leaderboard in both assists and steals, numbers that have survived every era of the team since.

He was a genuine two-way point guard in an era full of them, earning NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors twice and running the offense for the mid-eighties Mavericks teams that pushed the Lakers to seven games in the 1988 Western Conference Finals. Over sixteen NBA seasons with Dallas, New York, Orlando, and the Lakers he scored more than 16,000 points.

Dallas retired his number 12 to the rafters in 2018, and he has stayed close to the organization as a broadcaster and analyst. For anyone whose Mavs fandom predates Dirk, he is the guy.
